Biedermeier Goes Fishing
Koa, wenge and camphor wood

In creating the design for this table I drew upon my interest in the history of furniture design, my experiences as a Hawaiian archaeologist, and my love of this land and surrounding sea.

The table’s basic form and use of materials echoes the ethos of the Biedermeier Style of furniture made in Hawaii during the 19th century: clean lines, minimal ornamentation and use of locally available materials.

Drawing upon my work as an archaeologist, I incorporated the form of the fish hook. I chose camphor burl veneer on the base to mimic the sunlight mottling corals on the ocean floor. Spilling down the pedestal are sheets of wenge veneer like lava spilling over the lands edge. Lava, the base of these island, supports the table top, a top containing rocks of the seashore and koa of the highlands.
