A few years ago I was walking through a lava field on the
Big Island hoping to see the molten lava spill into the sea.
It was hot and dusty with no vegetation for miles.
I happened to notice one lady bug resting on a piece of lava.
This experience later came through as the abstracted design
on the table base and chair backs in the red dot.
A more subtle inspiration came through my studies in
sculpture and Asian art history at the University of Hawaii.
This is a speculation piece, the first major one in 25 years
done without a clients input. The design was based on
experience and a chance to use ideas that were either new
or not used in the past.
What I see in the finished piece are proportionate sculptural
forms with a contemporary Asian feel.
