The early Hawaiians continued voyaging to the south Pacific for centuries after their first arrival.They built sturdy canoes from virgin forests of koa using stone tools and rope woven from coconut.They studied the stars and became familiar with their every movement and could identify anyone of them just by a glimpse on a cloudy night. The stars were the compass that guided their canoes.
As their journey progressed across the Pacific the configuration of the stars would change. The voyagers could navigate by them and knew their place on the ocean and how far from their destination they were.
The hour of the navigator is first starlight and the stars are his tools that have become relics from the past, artifacts from a society of voyagers. The stars also became my inspiration.
